01/08/2012: Library Trustees Consider $5.7 Million Renovation
The Barrington Area Library announced on January 2, 2012 that a $5.7 million renovation is being considered. The press release states that the board is expected to vote in early 2012 whether to proceed with the renovation plan. The complete release can be read on the Barrington Area Library website under Library Information: News.
A January 4, 2012 article in the Daily Herald describes a discussion with the board president and the library executive directory. A January 5, 2012 article in the Barrington Courier Review also describes the plan.
Based on the press release and the two articles:
- Funding is expected to come from the library's existing reserves.
- A vote could come as early as the February 13th board meeting.
- Discussion is on the agenda for the January 9th board meeting.
This appears to be the first public announcement that there was such a project being developed. The timeline for decision making appears short. If you are interested in finding out the facts and expressing your opinion to the board:
- Read the press release and the news articles.
- Contact the library executive directory and board with your questions.
- Attend the January 9th and February 13th board meetings at the library to express your opinion, listen to the board discussion and ask questions.

Teachers' Contract Information
The current three-year Teachers’ contract was negotiated in 2009. That contract covers the 2009-2010, 2010-2011 (this year), and 2011-2012 school years. As discussed in the BETA January 2010 newsletter included elsewhere on this website, the contract terms were a significant disappointment. The District missed the opportunity to recognize the economic realities impacting all taxpayers.
